Americans Turn to Prayer to Find Faith in Trying Times

 Americans are experiencing a crisis of faith. The downturn of the economy after terrorist attacks, corporate ethics scandals and church abuse have rocked the foundation of society. What can people do to find faith?


What Research Says

  • Half of the U.S. population says that they have turned to their faith to help them personally process the Sept. 11 tragedies.

  • 82 percent of Americans believe that prayer can change what happens in a person’s life.

  • 85 percent of Americans pray weekly even though one-third of them don’t attend church.

People pray about many things: 

  • 95 percent thank God for what he has done in their lives.

  • 76 percent ask for forgiveness of sins.

  • 67 percent acknowledge God’s superior attributes.

  • 61 percent ask for specific needs or desires to be met.

  • 47 percent are silent during prayer time to listen for God’s response.
