What are Angels?

I first met my guardian angel during a health crisis.

As I was being wheeled into an ambulance, I remembered a book that mentioned that you can talk to angels. This seemed like a good time to meet my guardian angel, so I thought in my mind, “Guardian angel, please tell me your name.”

Angels and Free Will

At the core, free will means that you have momentarily separated your will from God’s creational energy in order to experience the task of rejoining your limited creational power with God’s will. You have a little can of creational paint, taken from God’s immense warehouse. When you pray, you are painting God’s pictures. Your art spreads, joining with God’s other painters. Angels help guide this creative process until humanity’s creations merge seamlessly with God’s creational energy, completing the picture of reunion.

Immediately, a voice said very loudly in my ear, “Sara.”

“Please don’t let me die,” I thought.

“It is not your time,” said the voice.

These days angels are everywhere in pop culture. Woman’s World and other publications frequently feature angel miracle stories. The long-running “Touched by an Angel” series inspired millions, and many authors, including angel expert Doreen Virtue, have made angels accessible to the masses.

According to a 2004 Gallup poll, 90 percent of Americans believe in God while only 70 percent believe in the devil. Belief in angels out numbers the dark one with 78 percent of the population holding faith in these divine messengers.

I am blessed by the presence of angels everyday, but what are angels? Sometimes I sense them as Amazon-like beings with long flowing robes and other times they appear as streams of light. Where do angels fit in the universal scheme of humanity’s evolution toward greater union with the God source of divine love?

I find that eternal questions require an inward connection with Spirit to gain wisdom beyond my personal knowledge. During meditative journaling, I asked God to help me understand angels.

Archangel Michael, who embodies divine truth, shared the following with me.

A Message from Archangel Michael

Angels are God’s messengers of light, illuminating the human heart and mind with the divine presence. God is light in its purest form, and angels stream forth from this source of eternal love. Angels embody certain streams of energy, such as love, healing, truth, strength, and other spiritual states of being. That’s why there are angels all around, assisting you on many levels in your life.

If the divine source of love is the creational energy God uses to bring into form your world, then angels are the directional energy God uses to touch and guide his creations. Angels are like God’s hands, tapping you gently on the shoulder, reminding you of your divine tasks upon Earth. Angels are God in action, a tangible presence of the divine in your world. As immense as God is, angels are needed to channel this divine light into a pinpointed stream of energy to guide humanity on its quest for union with the divine heart.

As God is source, angels are God’s hands. As angels represent God, angels work with human beings to assist them in becoming instruments of God. The hands of God are then able to play the instruments, creating the divine symphony upon Earth.

How do angels use the human heart to do God’s work?

Angels work through you in three distinct ways:

Message delivery. Angels guide you to others who need to feel the presence of God in their lives. When you pray, you open yourself to God, allowing the divine to respond. The brothers and sisters of humanity, the instruments of God, are used to do God’s work of giving healing messages to others. Messages can be words, hugs, smiles, acts of kindness, and other reminders of God in your world.
Energy bursts. God is a powerful source of never-ending energy, and angels assist humanity in bringing forth greater intensity, the profound divine presence, into your world. Humanity’s quest is reunion with the God source of energy, building heaven upon Earth by allowing greater intensities of divine energy to become embodied in your human vessel. As the divine presence increases within, angels send bursts of energy through your vessel to heal the world around you.
Light activation. God is light, you are light. When you say yes to God and angels to work through you, you become a tool of awakening. Your light dwells in your heart center, touching all you meet on a deeper spiritual level. Angels use your light to awaken and activate the spiritual hearts of others.

You may notice that angels do most of the work through you. So then, what must you do? You must open your heart wide to the divine, surrendering all that you think that you are to become who you truly are in God’s eyes. You do this by remaining in a ready state of “yes.”

Can you deliver a message of love to a stranger? Yes.

Can you allow God to dwell more deeply in your heart? Yes.

Can you let your light shine brightly? Yes.

And when you feel that you have surrendered all that is humanly possible, look deeper and find the greater yes within.
